Creative is the word we should focus on. Facebook is loaded with lack-luster promotional pieces that could bore the trousers off of a college professor on amphetamines. What you need to do is use a little creativity and create something that is a little bit different. Different means that you have to use a bit of creativity in order to pull it off. The basic idea is the same--in that you are trying to achieve a marketing goal, but you are also trying to make a connection without exposing your Facebook viewers to something that they have not seen a thousand times.
Tell them what they do and then twist it to suit you
Do you know why so many stand-up comedians use stories about their everyday life? It is because the audience can relate to what they are saying, and it creates a connection between them and the comedian. It can go from big things such as how Dave Chappelle says he’s brave but only when people are watching, down to small things such as when Lee Evans waves a tea towel at his smoke alarm to stop it going off. Jim Carry highlighted this fantastically when he was asked to tell a few jokes that people can relate to, so he told his story about the time he went to bed with three lingerie models.
You can use “relating with others” in the same way by starting with telling them something that they do. TV adverts do it all the time with cheesy lines such as, “Don’t you just hate…” or “Aren’t you sick of…” You can do a similar thing with your Facebook posts. When showing uses for your latex gloves, you can mention that it is a pain having to get paint off of your hands.
When selling your car tires you can sympathize with people having to pay money for un-fun things such as tires, before bringing people to the conclusion that if they have to have tires then they may as well have the best. Just like if you have to go to a theme park, then you may as well go to one that’s fun.
Being funny in your posts is great if done correctly
Do not forget that “funny” is subjective, but it is not so subjective that you cannot appeal to a massive amount of people. If not, then the world’s most famous standup comedians would only be able to muster a small crowd. The fact is you can create funny stuff that appeals to a lot of people, but that is not your main goal. You are looking to appeal to your own customer base.
This means that just how your marketing is targeted at certain people, then so may your comedy be targeted at certain people. Funny is pretty universally a good thing. Showing sex is good for some but not for others, the same goes for showing violence or sports. But, showing something funny is applicable to most of the population. The great thing is that as “market research” goes, there are few people who will not tell you what is funny and what is not. On a survey, would you rather rate bunches of flowers, or customer service, or how funny that entertaining things are?
Over promotion and marketing is a great way to put people off
You are not going to connect with people on Facebook by using promotion and marketing. But, you are in business in some way, so you are going to have to let people know what your products and your offers are. So, what you need to do is mix your promotional with your posts that connect with your Facebook followers.
This can be done by simply adding the occasional promotional post. The best way is to do it randomly so people do not learn which posts to avoid and which to look at. Keep your “connecting” posts going and then hit them with the occasional promotional post every now and again. This should serve your purposes quite well.
Show them how your product is different--do not tell them
Telling them in promotional posts about how your product is better than the competition is just silly because everybody does it. Instead, load up a video of your product being extraordinary. It is not an uncommon technique. Car adverts sometimes go down this path, such as showing a small car pulling a massive oil tanker into a harbor. Also, never copy other people’s posts or funnies because people will start to assume that all your content is copied and so will stop visiting your profile.
